The black cow was created by Frank J. Wisner of Cripple Creek, Colorado. Cripple Creek Cow Mountain Gold Mining Company was his company. He came up with the idea for the root beer float when thinking about the line of soda waters that were being made for the inhabitants of Cripple Creek one night. He observed the full moon shining over the snow-capped Cow Mountain through his window, which reminded him of a scoop of vanilla ice cream. That prompted him to add a tablespoon of vanilla ice cream to the Myers Avenue Red Root Beer, a children's soda. He realized he was onto something special the moment he took his first sip of the drink. His work was given the moniker 'Black Cow Mountain,' which was later abbreviated to 'black cow' by the local kids.
Not only youngsters, but even adults, have grown to appreciate this simple yet delicious beverage over time. Several fast-food restaurants also provide it. The black cow is a versatile dish that can be served at house parties, potluck luncheons, and dinners.
