How Many Glasses of Wine Are In A Bottle?

This is a common question many people have. You may be having a party and need to know how many bottles of wine to buy.

Or you may simply just be wondering for yourself. Whatever the reason, you've come to the right place to learn about wine measurements.

How many ounces are in a bottle of wine?

A standard bottle of wine is 750 ml, or about 25 fluid ounces. There are, of course, larger bottles of wine on the market.

However, the most common one, and probably the one you're picturing in your head, measures 25 fl oz.

What is a standard wine serving size?

A standard pour of wine is 5 fluid ounces. You may, of course, pour more than 5 fl oz into your glass, but the standard amount is 5 fl oz.

How many glasses of wine in a 750 ml bottle?

There are roughly 25 fluid ounces in a 750ml bottle of wine. Since a standard glass of wine holds about 5 fluid ounces, that means there are five glasses of wine per 750ml  bottle.

It all sounds simple, right?

Well, not exactly. Depending on the alcohol by volume (ABV) content in your wine, you may pour a smaller glass. You see, the higher ABV content, the smaller glass you should pour. This is to prevent you from drinking too much and ending up..well..drunk.

That's why when you go to a restaurant or a bar, they will pour you a smaller amount of wine if it has a high alcohol content.

What is the standard serving of wine at a restaurant?

Restaurants usually pour more than the standard 5 oz glass. For example, the popular restaurant California Pizza Kitchen offers two different serving sizes of wine. A 6 oz glass, or a 9 oz glass.

Most restaurants will pour a 6 oz glass of wine, so if you order a bottle of wine, you'll get about four glasses out of it.

Why are there different size wine glasses?

You may have noticed that red wine glasses are generally much larger than white wine glasses.

  • White wine glasses usually hold 8-12 ounces of wine
  • Red wine glasses usually hold 12-14 ounces of wine. Larger ones can hold up to 22 ounces.

Although a red wine glass holds a larger amount of liquid, the same standard amount of wine is poured into it as a white wine glass. Why is that? Well, there is a good reason.

    • The large shape of a red wine glass allows the wine to 'breathe more.' This is important because red wines are generally more bull bodied and have a bolder taste than white wines.
    • When a red wine comes into contact with air, it helps the wine to open up and allows more flavor to shine though. This is why you may see people open a bottle of red wine and let it breathe before drinking it or pour it into a decanter.
